METRO DISTRICT WEB SITE POLICY

NOTE: This policy was approved by the New York Metro District Board of Trustees on Jan. 10, 1998, and will be reviewed annually.

CONTENT

The District web site will contain information concerning District organization and activities, as well as contact information for District congregations. Since the District and UUA serve the needs of local congregations, and congregations can be more effective in their service and outreach when working together, we will strive to make the District web site useful in providing resources to congregations and facilitating communication and cooperation between them.

Much of the current content has been abstracted and updated from the annual District Directory.

Congregational contact information: In addition to the main street address, phone and e-mail address, only the minister, president (if no full-time minister), and office administrator will be listed as contacts on these public web pages. Further contact information can be found in the District Directory or on the individual web site of each congregation.

Each District congregation is encouraged to create its own web page and place it on the Internet. The District will provide links to each congregation's web page after we have been alerted to its existence.

The Unitarian Universalist District of Metropolitan New York does not take responsibility for, and does not necessarily agree with nor support the opinions expressed and information provided at other web sites which can be accessed by following links from the District site.

Use of the Site by Affiliated Organizations

The District intends to make server space available as needed by District-affiliated organizations for their web pages. Each organization should send the pages with associated graphics to the District web administrator by e-mail in fully web-ready and pre-tested form (HTML), after having alerted the web administrator that attached files will be sent. One-time or annually updated files can be accepted in ASCII format, but please read the introductory tips on how to format files for the web and follow the suggestions there.

The District will also attempt to find volunteers to help affiliated organizations create and prepare their web pages, but no guarantees are offered.

If regular (more than quarterly) updates to the pages, special graphics (more than 300K) or programming (cgi, java) are required, we strongly recommend securing another provider for the pages and alerting the District webweaver to provide a link to them. There are currently at least two service providers who offer free space for web pages.

Personal Information

We are well aware of the difficult balance between providing useful contact information for the conduct of District business and the promotion of Unitarian Universalism, and the potential danger of posting personal information on the widely accessible world wide web.

The District web site will contain contact information for appropriate individuals. However, street addresses will be removed unless no other means of contact has been provided. Post office box and congregation street addresses will be included. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses for individuals will also be included, unless we receive a request from a given individual that all or part of their contact information be removed. Anonymous pictures of individuals may be included, but before associating an individual's picture with his or her name or contact information, we will first seek her or his permission.

Information about another person posted to our message board or guestbook without explicit permission from the person and from the site administrator will be deleted (as will advertisements and other unrelated information).

Guided by our living faith, the Unitarian Universalist District of Metropolitan New York exists to be a source of connection and transformation for our congregations and our larger world.
